چکیده

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a common and serious complication of primary tubercular complex in preschool children in our country. Following exposure to tubercle bacilli, it takes about 6-8 weeks for a primary complex to develop(l). Six to twelve months after the primary infection, tuberculous meningitis, secondary to hematogenous spread, may occur. The commonest age group for tuberculous meingitis is 9 months to 3 year(2). BCG vaccination prevents hematogenous dissemination and development of TBM to the extent of 60-80%. Immunity following vaccination takes about 8 to 10 weeks to develop during which interval exposure to tubercle bacilli can cause disseminated infection(3). TBM has been reported to occur in a 4-month-old infant(4). We report a case of TBM which occured in a BCG vaccinated infant at an early age.

EVALUATION OF DIRECT MICROSCOPY, CULTURE, AND POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF TUBERCULOUS MENINGITIS

In view of the importance of early diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (TBM), the efficiency of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), one of the most reliable and sensitive DNA-based assays, was compared with conventional methods (acid-fast microscopy and culture) for the detection of M. tuberculosis in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from patients suspected of TBM. Of the 29 CSF specim...

مقایسه غلظت آدنوزین‌دآمیناز مایع مغزی‌نخاعی در بیماران مننژیت سلی و غیر سلی

Background and Aim: Diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis is difficult because of its non-specific clinical presentations which may be confused with other disorders of central nervous system. The initiation of anti-TB medication can often be delayed because of lack of available laboratory tests. This study was aimed at evaluating the adenosine deaminase (ADA) concentration in differentiating tube...

Sensitive enzyme immunoassay for early diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis.

Cerebrospinal fluid from patients with tuberculous, pyogenic, and viral meningitis, as well as from appropriate control individuals, were assayed for immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M antibody activity to Mycobacterium bovis BCG by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. BCG linked covalently to plastic disks served as the antigen in a classical indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A s...
